The Fortune was the first London theatre to be built after World War I. Very small but perfectly formed, holding just 431 people, it was finished in contemporary concrete but with small medieval style windows to mimic the first but long-gone Fortune Theatre built in the City of London in 1600.
From 1989 to 2023, the Fortune Theatre played host to the enigmatic production of The Woman in Black, billed as ‘the most terrifying live theatre experience in the world’ and one of the longest-running shows to play in London’s West End after The Mousetrap, Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera.
Fittingly, considering its most famous play, the Fortune is said to be haunted, with actors reporting numerous ghostly encounters at the venue.
