The original theatre, which opened in 1881, was built by impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte to house the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. Substantially remodelled in 1929 with a stunning art deco interior designed by Basil Ionides, the theatre was completely restored in 1993 following fire damage.
In 2013 it presented the Beatles musical, Let It Befollowed in 2014 by Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Robert Lindsay and Katherine Kingsley. It also presented Gypsy starring Imelda Staunton, Lara Pulver, and Peter Davison.
The theatre has also presented numerous plays including the RSC’s production of Richard IIIstarring Robert Lindsay, Blithe Spirit with Penelope Keith and The Sunshine Boys starring Danny DeVito and Richard Griffiths.
The theatre is now home to the spectacular new musical theatre production of 9 to 5 the Musical.
